Smouse Strip Mine
The Smouse Strip mine is an area that has encountered significant mining including deep and surface mining. Polluted water drains from many locations and the mine also impacts the groundwater in the area. While this area was monitored in the Anderson Creek Assessment, it was only identified as a problem area that would need further investigation.
ACWA began looking into treatment options for this site as it major source of pollution to the watershed, specifically to the Little Anderson Creek area. Some work was completed on this site including the construction of three retention ponds and limited land reclamation. However many discharges still exist.
ACWA, Pike Township, Clearfield County Conservation District, PADEP-Moshannon District Mining Office and Clearfield County Senior Environment Corps have been working to complete a study of the area that will allow for a treatment plan. This work will hopefully restore this area and allow for a decrease to the pollution load.
